About Upper Thames River Conservation Area

The Upper Thames River Conservation Area (UTRCA) encompasses over 29,000 acres of protected land along the upper reaches of the Thames River in southwestern Ontario, Canada. This expansive conservation area includes woodlands, wetlands, river valleys, and agricultural lands that support a diverse array of plant and animal species. The geography features rolling hills, floodplains, and several small tributaries feeding into the Thames River, which flows eventually into Lake St. Clair. The region's ecology is characterized by mixed forests, Carolinian vegetation, and important wetland habitats that provide homes for species such as river otters, herons, and various migratory birds.

The UTRCA was established to manage natural resources sustainably while offering public recreational opportunities. Visitors can enjoy over 40 kilometers of multi-use trails for hiking, mountain biking, and cross-country skiing, as well as numerous access points for canoeing and kayaking on the Thames River and tributaries. The conservation area also features interpretive programs and educational facilities aimed at raising awareness about watershed protection and natural heritage.

Historically, the Thames River drainage basin has been inhabited by Indigenous peoples including the Anishinaabe and other First Nations, whose cultural legacy is honored through interpretive signage and collaborative stewardship. Nearby towns such as London and Woodstock serve as gateways for visitors exploring the area. The conservation area's balance of natural beauty, outdoor activities, and environmental education makes it a valued destination for nature lovers, families, and paddlers throughout the year.
